Find a story for tonight · Too loud, too much
The 5-4-3-2-1 calm-down asks for 15 things. A three-year-old needs six.
The grown-up version of this grounding game asks for five things you see, four you can touch, three you hear, two you smell and one you taste. That is fifteen things across five senses, a lot to hold in the middle of a loud room.
The Little Light who knows this feeling: Fen.
Try this tonight
- Practice at home first, when nobody is upset.
- Find three things you can see. Point to each one.
- Cup your ears and find two sounds.
- Touch one soft thing, a blanket or your grown-up’s hand.
- Squeeze your hands tight, then let them go floppy.
Why it works
“Acknowledge FIVE things you see around you… FOUR things you can touch… THREE things you hear… TWO things you can smell… ONE thing you can taste.”
5 + 4 + 3 + 2 + 1 is 15 items. In Fen at the Harvest Supper, Fen does 3 + 2 + 1: three things she sees, two she hears, one soft thing she touches. That is 6 items and three senses.
So: Shrink it to 3-2-1 for little ones, and let one of each be in the room you are actually in.
If you skip it: Ask a toddler for fifteen things in the middle of a noisy party and the calm-down becomes one more demand.
